Air Barriers

Why an Air Barrier System?

In order to design and build safe, healthy, durable, comfortable and economical buildings, airflows must be controlled.
Airflow carries moistures that impacts the long-term  performance of building materials (serviceability), overall structural integrity (durability), a building’s behavior in fire (spread of smoke) as well as indoor air quality (distribution of pollutants and location of microbial reservoirs) and thermal energy.

One of the key strategies in the control of airflow is the use of air barriers.
An air barrier is a system of materials designed to control airflow between a conditioned space and an unconditioned space. A properly designed and installed air barrier and/or thermal envelope can significantly reduce air intrusion as well as the thermal load on a structure.

Understanding air barriers is necessary in order to develop effective enclosure design, to set achievable performance requirements and to verify compliance.
The proper installation of an effective air barrier system takes the acumen and experience that Pisgah Insulation possesses.

Uncontrolled air leakage through the building envelope will affect the performance of the building materials within the wall assembly. You’ve made a major investment in your facilities and that investment deserves the very best protection available. That very best protection is offered by the AIR-SHIELD line of air barriers from W. R. MEADOWS. The AIR-SHIELD line includes fluid-applied air barriers, sheet membranes, and vapor-permeable formulations.

Tremco Commercial Sealants & Waterproofing understands the concerns faced when constructing, renovating or updating a facility and is continually working towards the development of products, systems and engineered solutions that will set new standards for performance.

Air barriers are essential for a high-performing building envelope. They dramatically improve building energy efficiency, indoor comfort and longevity. CCW provides three types of air barriers: self-adhered sheet; fluid-applied; and fluid-applied, vapor-permeable. All have been evaluated by the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA) and meet the most stringent energy codes including: 2012 & 2015 IECC; 2010 & 2013 ASHRAE 90.1; Massachusetts Energy Code 780 CMR; and the Canadian National Building Code. Fire-Resist products are formulated for burn resistance and have passed the NFPA 285 test in many wall assemblies. To increase moisture barrier protection, CCW also provides a variety of flashing products for use with air and vapor barrier systems.

StoGuard® is an efficient assembly of products engineered to create a waterproof air barrier membrane in wall construction. By protecting the backup assembly first, this fluid applied waterproof air barrier provides superior protection against moisture intrusion and air leakage, delivering significant energy savings in hot and cold climates.
